"Rockin’ Rotterdam" is a photographic project, organised by the Royal Photographic Society, BENELUX Chapter, where we have taken one creative or interesting photo in every street within the Rotterdam ring road. We have had over 4000 images submitted from 100 photographers. In this exhibition we will showcase one photo for every street - all 2809 of them.

Why Rotterdam?

The project was conceived in response to our members’ wanting a winter project.  Maybe the obvious cities to choose might have been Amsterdam or Den Haag but Rotterdam was selected because it is such a super, vibrant, diverse city.  A little less well known perhaps, and therefore more unusual things to discover.

We had fantastic modern architecture, historic buildings and wharfs; water, nature and friendly people. A photographer’s dream.

Rockin’ Rotterdam Exhibition

10th to 30th October 2017

Timmerhuis, Rodezand 3011AN Rotterdam

Closed Sundays

Free entry

In the exhibition, you will see work from the organising group, displayed alongside that from members of the public, all of whom thoroughly enjoyed exploring the streets of this vibrant, amazing city.  We have had Rotterdammers joining in, and very many different nationalities.   All coming together to celebrate Rotterdam.

Why not come along and see what we took in your street?  Or for visitors then this is a splendid way to really get to know the city - the diversity of people and neighbourhoods.

In the exhibition, each postcode is represented by one of our photographers who has provided a few words about their personal feelings when shooting in the area.

Archive for the future

After the exhibition, the entire collection of images will be given to the Gemeente for their use and to store in the city archives.  It will make a valuable collection which future generations will be able to refer to.

We wish to thank the various sponsors who have contributed to funding the exhibition - without them this would not have been possible.

The project has been organised by the Royal Photographic Society Benelux Chapter, but photos have been submitted not just from our members but absolutely anyone.  All 100 of them.

What sort of photos have we taken?

Just about anything creative and quirky – the more interesting we could make a street look the better:

  • The postman delivering the mail,
  • The local cat basking in the sun,
  • The buildings and characteristic architecture,
  • The people and their everyday activities,
  • The shops or a typical local store,
  • Street art.

Colour, mono, night time, day time, snow, fog, rain – it all adds to the variety.

The Scope of the Project

We defined the area as postcodes 30XX of Rotterdam that lie within the ring road.

Exhibition Photo Book

A Rockin' Rotterdam photo book will be available at the exhibition.  This will be a great way for those enjoying the exhibition to retain the memories of the project and all those people involved.  It will make a great gift for a proud Rotterdammer, and for participating photographers, friends and family.  A selection of images will be displayed with the aim of showing the essence of each postcode.

Meet ups (photo-walk)

We organised Sunday morning meetings for photographers to visit the streets to take the photos.  More than 100 people took part over the six months.

Collecting the photos

We have now closed the project from the point of view of taking new photos.

Own a Postcode

Some individuals and camera clubs took ownership of an entire postcode and committed to taking all the photos in that area.  When these images are displayed in the exhibition, only their photos for the 'Own a Postcode' area will be displayed.  However the web site galleries contain all the photos taken for each postcode.
